$10.5M Thoroughbred Racehorse was Auctioned off in Ocala

by Eric English

A thoroughbred racehorse was auctioned off in Ocala in April for $10.5M

This is what Ocala is known for.

Securing a bloodline,

owning a legacy.

The Horse Capital of the World continues to draw equestrian wealth.

A Flightline colt. 2022 Horse of the Year. Arguably the most dominant since Secretariat.

This crushed a previous OBS (Ocala Breeder’s Sales Company) record of $3M.

But this unsuspecting central Florida town offers more than just that.

- Large tracts of available land
- Rich soil
- Luxury infrastructure
- Favorable year-round weather

Plus, money goes further for owners moving from Palm Beach and places in the northeast like Connecticut. As people move from different parts of Florida and across the U.S. to Ocala, there’s an underlying tension between the “Old Florida” and “New Money”.

Ocala is attractive because it offers accessibility without the big city feel. As a realtor in this area, I see it all the time.

Locals want to protect the legacy of their historic farms, while growth brings things like the expansion of the World Equestrian Center.

The tension is important because horses occupy close to 200,000 acres of land in Marion County. Developers and owners have a responsibility for what Ocala looks like in 20 years.

We all do.

Whether it’s Ocala,

or our hometown.

Say what you want about this place, but auctioning off horses for over 10 Million…?

Pretty badass.
